Először a Dob utca 86-ban laktunk, ott is születtem.

A Dob utcán elindítottak a Duna irányába. Emberek ott feküdtek a kövön pokrócokon, családok.

Bementünk a lakásba, besötétítettünk, irtózatos ordítást hallottunk.

Tudniillik azok a segélycsomagok, amiket repülők dobtak le a mai Lipótváros területére a védett házak körzetére azok csak a német katonáknak voltak számba. Megfelelően gondoskodtak is arról, hogy ne a zsidók férjenek hozzá. Velünk más dolgok történtek. Bejöttek a nyilasok, mi svájci védett házban voltunk. Bejelentették, hogy lakásból most elmegyünk mindenki hagyja nyitva a lakást. Ott megálltunk a tömegbe. Hát a Tátra utcába. Magyar rendőrök ötöst érdemeltek a magatartásukért.

A gyerekesek kevesebben voltak valamivel, a gyerekesek hazamehetnek. Vissza is mentünk a Tátra utca 25-be a lépcsőházba voltunk útba az emelet felé mikor egy géppuska sorozatot hallottunk. Akkor jött a „Nicht vor dem Kind” 3. része. Azokat belőtték a Dunába.

Egyre gyakrabban lehetet hallani holokauszt tagadást itt Magyarországon is. Néhány országban úgy tudom itt is bevezették a büntethetőséget a holokauszttagadásnak.

Mi az Ön üzenete mai holokauszttagadókhoz, mit mondana Ön most nekik?

Tessenek megnézni a Slihoczki istentiszteletet a Kozma utcai sírkertbe.

Tehát valahogy a fiatalságot én oda terelném efelé mondjuk műfaj felé, amit Az Élet Menete csinál.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

I am Péter Kardos. I was born as Peter Kostenbaum in 1936, which means that I lived through and survived the Holocaust when I was 8 years old. I got into a small civic family, namely, I spent my childhood in an orthodox Jewish family and in an orthodox way of life. My mother was a domestic servant to my father.

The official beginning of the Holocaust, March 19, 1944, before the German occupation, I had already heard of disenfranchisement as a child, but officially the ordeals began on March 19 during the German occupation. That as a child, that I saw the Holocaust I have to say honestly what I went through there, what I saw and heard much later, years later I found out, because as a child, I had no basis for comparison, I thought that what I see, I hear all associated with childhood. So it wasn’t about playing football or other games. Instead, instead of toys, there were bombs of houses built of cubes built at home, there were sirens of air alarms sung with their mouths.

Sometimes someone from the family was taken away, which also belonged to childhood. He came back two days later, all I heard was that I had escaped. When I wanted to tell the details, my mother said “Nicht vor dem Kind” (Not in front of the child). It was the first German sentence I learned and understood well in the end. For the second time, I knew what it meant. It didn’t always work for me to understand during my entire eight-year-old age, because once I was inevitably dropped into the middle of events they couldn’t keep up. My father was called up for labor in 44. We first lived at 86 Dob Street, where I was born. I had to move to a star house. Before we moved into the star house on April 4th, I memorized the date, we had to wait for the yellow star on the left side of our dress, that is, over our hearts, on every piece of clothing we traveled on the street, so its a big jacket balloon jacket sweater shirt. It was a decree that it had to be 10 cm in diameter and could only be canary yellow.

Now that we lived in the neighbors’ home, we didn’t go into the star houses. The non-Jewish neighbors monitored whether we wore the star properly, but did not comment much on what the neighbors were like later. Provision has been made for the designation of yellow-star houses and for all Jewish people to leave their homes that are not yellow-star and move to a place. The closest to us at Dob utca 86 was Kertész utca 27, which was a yellow star and my father’s relatives lived there. They received us. My father was then called to work from there, I never saw him again, but this is a later story of what happened after that.

I remember curfews have been determined when we can leave our apartment. I remember shopping lanes this was not called then, but it was determined when Jews could go shopping. I remember traveling on the tram that when the tram 6 consisted of three cars on the boulevard, even six Jews could only get on the last car, they could travel on it. From then on, the star was served to merchants wherever we went with the star. We can’t go to many just to buy food there was time and opportunity, it was 2 hours if I remember correctly every day. In the meantime, we lived our lives in the star house, where only Jews lived. This is a three three-storey very many apartment houses on Kertész Street 27 I also visited once since the 70th anniversary it is nervously very finished it again I do not think that belongs to this topic. The point is, my mother was taken away from there for the first time. The janitor, who was the only non-Jew in the house, slammed the rusty iron tram signaling the alarm, which hung there a hell of a 50-centimeter piece. When it started to rumble, everyone rushed into the gangway, the hallway, and then it was not the caretaker’s voice but the sound of an arrowhead that within ten minutes, every woman of that age would appear in the yard with three days of food. Women because men who were of that age were taken to labor sooner than I said. Well, my mother packed up and said goodbye to us because my sister and I were left alone. My sister did not yet belong to the age group that was taken away, but she escaped from the house and from then on she hid in the capital as a Transylvanian refugee. He managed to hide until his release, where we got to, where I ended up, sometimes he managed to get some kind of food from somewhere, and so he visited us three or three times a month while hiding.

Well, I was left alone in the star house, I remember on October 15, 1944, when Horthy announced that Hungary had exited the war, so there is peace. People forget about the Jewish residents dancing in the street, out in the yard. Their first thing was to tear off the yellow star from themselves after they tore off the framed yellow star over the gate of the house, indicating that Jews lived here. This great euphoria is this great joy, it took about two and a half hours. Everyone had already planned, packed that we would go home then, everyone would go back to where it came from because there were few Indigenous people in that house. And about two and a half hours later, it was announced that Szálasi had taken power. Well, as a kid, it didn’t matter to me at the time that Horthy and Szálasi broke out in peace, so they said with such a funny voice, but when Szálasi took power, there was a lot of silence. and he didn’t have to wait long. Arrived at the Sagittarius it was already dark this October 16 in the late afternoon all Jewish residents come here to the yard within a quarter of an hour to bring their jewelry and money. The apartments are left open. We all went down there, gathered in the yard and then went out into the street, where a large crowd of Jews was waiting on the corner of Kertész Street and Dob Street, accompanied by archers. The Arrow Cross wore the same uniform as the new Arrow Cross 70 years later. A huge German tank lit a gun with a reflector on us with a barrel. I had only seen this in newspapers before, especially at such close range, it was an awesome sight. One or several crates have been dropped by the archers, everyone throws their watches and jewelry into this crate for money. We will check after whom we find it in place. Well wedding rings, necklaces, earrings knocked money banknotes all in the box It took a few minutes and then the order was issued to get started now. A few thousand people came there from your house next door. They started on Dob Street in the direction of the Danube. I think it’s important to say that because it didn’t say anything to me then. We headed for the Danube, which didn’t mean much to me, but when I saw my mother and sister coming in talking and whispering things in each other’s ears then my sister and my mother wanted to say something to me “Nicht vor dem Kind” it was number 2, the second “Nicht vor dem Kind” and then we set off. At the end of Dob utca, Wesselényi utca, we turned into Wesselényi utca and one half of the crowd was driven to the Tobacco synagogue and the other half to the Rumbach synagogue. We were in the Rumbach Synagogue, which was already crowded and we didn’t understand where we would be there, so there was neither a seat nor a stand for quite a bit. People lay there on the stone blankets, families. Inside the Tobacco Church or the Rumbach Church, I remember that we had to go down some stairs from the front left behind us behind the scenes to a cellar like this that was also full and there was somehow squeezed for us under the stairs instead. We spent the whole night there. We had no idea what the next move would be, the early morning the Arrow Cross announced: Now everyone is going back to their accommodation!

We went back to 27 gardener streets and then we realized why we had to leave the apartments that had been looted open. We went into the almost empty apartment, the beds were there and the furniture was there, but there were no more valuable things. The radio has long had to deliver no phone before anything. The point is we went back and occupied the apartment we settled in at the same time it just sounds again in the yard. We go out and the archers say, now everyone goes into their apartment, turns off the lights, puts on the blackout frames. I have to explain this, not everyone knows when the airstrikes against Hungary started, so in Budapest, for example, the windows had to be darkened every night so that the planes would not be the house or the apartment. This was solved by most of them by making a frame out of wood, putting black paper in it and squeezing the window frames every night. So then everyone darken the apartment who looks out the window shot. We went into the apartment, darkened, and heard a terrible roar. The voices of hundreds of people from the yard, this is a huge yard from somewhere we drove into the house Jews that for what purpose you do not know. They went through the yard to hear them and drove them down to the basement. There was a cruel roar from the basement for half a night. There was torture there or what happened, I don’t know that specifically to this day, but I do know that the end is that they were taken somewhere out of the basement and re-announced who would report, who would come down to the yard again. My mother moved to the Újbuda brick factory. My sister ran away again and I was left alone, trusting in the goodwill of my neighbor. Well, as an eight-year-old child, a child can’t be left here alone in some way. This shelter was valid in sheltered houses. In recent years it was called an international ghetto, it was not called that at the time, it was called a protected house. There have been some countries whose embassies have issued an asylum seeker with the title or this citizen xy of this is a national of that country and is under their protection. This letter of defense to the Arrow Cross was about as much as, let me say, an analogy when someone tried to pass it on to an Arrow Cross when he proved it, tore it apart, and threw it away. That’s what the letter of protection meant, and that’s what the security of the protected house meant, that’s how much the house was protected. The neighbors took me to Tátra utca 25, and I waited there to see if any of my family members could find me. It was my mother who escaped from the brick factory in Óbuda. He told a terrible drama. There he no longer told me, but the others, that I had accidentally run into Sanyi in the brick factory where we were tens of thousands. It was a gathering place, before the Jews were taken abroad, they were collected in the Óbuda brick factory. Sanyi was my father who somehow got there on duty or was taken there. He was told by my mother, who was a very food-rich someone, my father and a very inanimate someone, she told my father, Sanyi, let’s escape. That’s what he told her. But why not? Because what if there is a roll call and we’re not here. Well, this civic obedience meant his martyrdom at the same time. My escaped mother came to Tatra Street to somehow find out we were there. From then on, we lived there for twenty-seven in a 50-square-foot apartment. Well, you can imagine that everything here

room was occupied. It was quite difficult, say, to create hygienic conditions in such conditions. Cooking as there was neither gas nor a fire in the yard built of such tree branches I don’t know a campfire, so it looked like a campfire and on such iron racks large pots and pots were cooked to which they had access. The most common dish was the yellow pea vegetable. This could have been easier to obtain for some reason, and what the sweets meant was called molasses. Supposedly from sugar beet when sugar is cooked it is a by-product that was given to the cattle so it managed to get the molasses that came in such crates with such a red cross or I don’t know what kind of aid organization. As far as you know, the aid packages dropped by planes into the area of the protected houses in today’s Lipótváros area were only available to German soldiers. Adequate care was taken to ensure that Jews did not have access to it. Other things have happened to us. The Sagittarians came in, we were in a shelter in Switzerland. It was announced that we are leaving our apartment now, everyone will leave the apartment open. We had already guessed what this meant, but it now promised to be more serious, as they were escorted to the bank of the Danube in the opposite St. Stephen’s Park. On the banks of the Danube, there were again hundreds of stellar Jewish people accompanied by archers. We stopped there in the crowd. It occurred to me that my mother and sister, who was right there when they took us, were holding each other’s hands and my mother asked me if I could find me home. Can I tell you where to go home? Well to Tatra Street. I’m telling you why I wouldn’t find it, so I found it here, so it’s not far. GOOD! I didn’t know why I should have found it home, I found out later. Well, we stood there for about an hour. They were arrows, they were cops. Police would note that they were the most humane people during the entire Holocaust. Hungarian police deserved a high five for their behavior. So much for that.

In about an hour you will come to a car coming from us to stop 100 meters away. He gets out of it, some civilian man, and talks to the archers there. I didn’t know it would even matter, then car away. Arrows come over and yell at us. Have the children stand in line with the child! so it happened, the children got out of line waiting for another half hour, so the crowd split in two. There were fewer children with something, children could go home. We also went back to Tátra utca 25 and were on our way upstairs when we heard a series of machine guns. Then came Part 3 of “Nicht vor dem Kind”. They were shot in the Danube. When I buried the bones I found in the Danube more than 70 years later in the cemetery on Kozma Street, because I was inaugurated as a rabbi in 1971, I don’t think so. When I buried the bones again life in me this whole scene, the whole story. God makes it impossible for oblivion because (“Lajsz iskokh ne forgetjcs” 22.20 p) But using more and more rude tools My good belief is due to the time that has passed and because oblivion is one of the qualities of man to always remind him. Since the change of regime, Arrow Crosses, swastikas, blood and honor, right-wing Arrow Crosses have all reminded him of this. Returning now to the events of that time. Well, a German military unit around the corner on Tatra Street, I don’t know which street corner, set up a cannonball and fired the planes from there when they came to bomb. Well, that wasn’t life insurance, we already knew, so we went down to the basement, where we were trying to get through.

The pandemic changed our lives a lot, how did Lord Rabbi survive this period?

I have said before that God reminds us not to forget the Holocaust. I note in parentheses that there is only one organization in Hungary, The Process of Life, which aims to not forget the Holocaust. Parentheses close.
So pandemic. Let’s say a pandemic is not comparable, no one can think of the Holocaust. But what happened and happens within this does not evoke bad memories in a survivor. At the time of the first wave, when there was no vaccination, only if they were sick and dead. Namely, they are so dead, then we are not used to going to a relative without saying goodbye and dying, so you can’t even say goodbye to him. And then provisions were made to prevent the disease. Well, the first such provision was the curfew. I don’t think there is a Holocaust survivor in whom this curfew would not have evoked the times when I had already been told when we could leave the apartment in 1944. Then there was the shopping bar, which was not so called at the time, but as I said earlier, it was determined when we could shop. Inevitably, it came to the survivor’s mind, which on the one hand is no wonder because we are mentally hypersensitive and then I expressed myself subtly. It comes to our minds about everything, even more specifics. Now, a few weeks ago, I saw someone put up a yellow star here in Budapest. He wrote not that he was Jude, but that he was unvaccinated and walked into the street. Jewish people were outraged by this. Again, they are not Holocaust survivors because they do not think they are outraged at this. Already third, quarter generations have to use the Holocaust to find this consecrated symbol of the yellow star for such profane things. It didn’t bother me. I see this, too, as the man who set it apart as one of God’s servants, whose mission it was to remind others of the Holocaust. So there is nothing desecrating, I have not seen anything negative in it, and I still do not see it to this day. Yes, he feels that he excludes the unvaccinated like the Jews of his time. We know this is not the case, because it would not have been possible to get rid of that yellow star with one vaccine. From this, yes, but even if the analogy is exaggerated, he mentions some exclusion here. Now, of his own free will, he is excluded from certain places and events. But this kind of desecration of the memory of the Holocaust I don’t see anything like that in this.
Now, what foreign echoes get here is that in America “container” theories are being born, that Jews are the boss of Pfizer, the Jew is the officer of the Jew, and so on and so forth. I have to say and now I don’t want to brag about my mental state, but I know from experience and many of us know that anti-Semitism works smoothly without Jews. So if there is anti-Semitism even without the Jews then there would be no such container without theories that it is not the Jews. Just to tell you the curiosity, at first, the Chinese had two anti-Chinese substances when they were told from Wuhan that the virus came from there, from a Chinese laboratory. But such “anti-Chineseism” was not like that. For a few days it was said that the Chinese were pigs, they weren’t careful, now they’re destroying us. But when Pfizer came, anti-Semitism came again, but that’s what the Jews are looking for. They vaccinate each other and so on and so forth. Fortunately, this has come to Hungary here in a much milder form, so not to mention a fraction of what they are coming from America on this subject.

Are you worried that anti-Semitism is a never-ending phenomenon and that anti-Semitism may ever disappear from the face of the earth?

Concerned about the eternity of anti-Semitism, I went to a psychiatrist at the same time many decades ago because I was depressed. The psychiatrist said we would let go of what we couldn’t help. So let’s not dive in, let alone be depressed, we have to live with it. I would now like to answer the question of whether anti-Semitism is eternal. I think there will always be anti-Semitism, whether there will be Jews in the world or not, because there is a need for scapegoat. There is nothing wrong with me and I am to blame for that. Someone else is at fault so something is wrong with me. Consequently, they are probably Jews, but I could have said that Gypsies are only Gypsies in a certain other category so Gypsies are not as mindful as Jews because they do not perform public functions and so on and so forth. Now I don’t think it will end, as far as the root from which the eternal living root begins will be, although today this Catholic Church has distanced itself from its own anti-Semitism, from which anti-Semitism originates, because it certainly starts and goes from the Catholic Church to anti-Semitism. through the outside world into the profane world comes the picture of anti-Semitism.

How worried are you about the disappearance of the memory of the Holocaust?

Holocaust denial can be heard more and more often here in Hungary as well. In some countries, I know criminalization for Holocaust denial has been introduced here as well. Well now it so crashed that they said it was good there was no Holocaust, but it will be! This, on the other hand, is no longer punishable, to tell me teaching and education would be sooner than punishment because punishment is not considered the best method, Well then it goes silent when punished, but it doesn’t die this Holocaust thing. What the fate of the Holocaust will be like is already an interesting thing, at least I have a better tip for it. When the last survivor goes and the last first second generation goes, the Holocaust will line up with the tragedies of hundreds of years ago. I don’t know about the catastrophe in Mohács, the Armenian genocide is also lined up there, as they don’t remember the dead of the First World War today, either before or later than those listed earlier. They do not remember the victims of the Armenian genocide, they do not remember the other national tragedies, and so will the Holocaust. They will be taught in school. About as much will be taught about the Holocaust one page Holocaust one page Mohács disaster one page Armenian genocide and then the children take note. If you need an exam they will tell you. There is no and no witness that there will be no more witnesses who have heard the story directly from a survivor from a narrative. So what is not forgetting only becomes equal to the others, then I say.

What is your message to today’s Holocaust deniers, what would you tell them now?

After that, I was lucky enough to take part in a commemoration of a tour of Budapest, Buda eruption, in Városmajor two years ago. In incognito, he did not sneak into the crowd as a rabbi, where he remembered the Buda eruption with such stylized arrow crosses and swastikas and flags. It was a few meters from Daniel Bíró Jewish Hospital and the Jewish Beloved House, where my grandmother was killed and the other patients were poured with kerosene, the others were set on fire, and shot in the abdomen. The new Nazis parade here I don’t even call them new Nazis, for some reason this is widespread. So I sneaked in and wondered what they were talking about. Now I have experienced the next one and this should be good news for those who are concerned. They were young and middle-aged. In a black uniform, Árpád’s band and such a band and such a cross. Serbian Pista! Where did they go in the afternoon? Well, we don’t have a program yet. Don’t you want to come down to dinner?
So 99% of them talked about such topics until the ceremony itself began. The speaker at the ceremony is of German origin, because a special delegation from Germany used to come from Germany. In commemoration of the outbreak, no anti-Semitic, not even anti-Semitic, suspicious expression speech was uttered. But the heroism of the Hungarians, the martyrdom of the Hungarians, that is, those who took part in the eruption, who were killed, was the main topic. So a private conversation about the daily program set, where were you? Where are we going? What do you do? How’s the kid, wife? Thank you everything is fine. And meanwhile, in addition to the cordon, German and Hungarian anti-fascist organizations are protesting against them. So there were two camps in Városmajor at the time, and then it will be revealed in retrospect how lucky the liberal journalists who were there were to not recognize the Chief Rabbi.
Now, what would have happened if they had recognized me, I can’t predict that. There was no lynching mood. Now, if I were pessimistic I would say that because they weren’t recognized until then there is no lynching mood. If they recognize it is another matter. But it didn’t actually feel any threat and then in retrospect from there when they found out I was inside the protesters sent a lady who introduced herself to protect me. Well, it didn’t happen because I got bored of the meeting and I left with a very bad feeling, I mean, not because the mood was like that, but actually the capital allowed it a few meters from the killing of the martyrs, or anyone in Buda was not waiting in the castle. where they are kept in Városmajor they can keep it. Suppose the good, the authorities did not know what the Jewish hospital in Városmajor Street had done in the Jewish home of Father Kun and his archery friends.

What are your biggest fears about Holocaust commemorations and their future?

I think the pandemic will change not only everything else, but also this remembrance during the remembrance I now think of the annual rural commemorations organized by Mazsihisz that I don’t think this one big central commemoration would be enough now. and so the Programs of the Life Course are still essential. So the March of Life should take over this whole function and then the community of faith, which is the official representative of Hungarian Jewry, would conduct this at a large central martyr’s service. On the one hand, because there are no longer any Jews in the countryside. There are virtually no survivors in the countryside, with one or two exceptions. Now, when they come together to commemorate, they do not come together to remember, but to remind. But according to the rules of Hungarian grammar, only those who have experienced what they remember can remember. Now the reminder reminds others it is already relaxing the memory culture we call it. Although how many churches were represented at this time I had to say when I was even more active and attending, there were fewer and fewer other churches attending these commemorations. Understandable, lifelike, logical. Take a look at the Slihoczki worship in the tomb garden on Kozma Street. Every year they gathered before the big autumn festivities and commemorated the Martyrs. It has been declining year by year, there are fewer and fewer people decade by decade. Eventually, the students of the Scheiber school were evicted there, mostly the elementary school students because they brought their parents or their grandparents with relatives they formed. If the Scheiberes were not there, I would claim that more than 30 to 40 people would no longer attend these commemorations. The numbers dropped sharply as witnesses, survivors, and second-generation people left.

What could be done about it?

I repeat the course of life. It is appropriate to know The Program of the Life process is colorful so there is no such thing as a cantor, rabbi, cantor. Then the rabbi stands out and says when we came up from the cellar in 1944. Who came up from the basement? Where was he then in 1944? So what he says is already unbelievable. Now that my dad told me. His father didn’t even live then. Now my grandfather is starting, my grandfather told me then he did not live. It’s so very cool, so in a neutral quote, so to speak, a little church should be a more neutral commemoration of what the Process of Life produces.

What is your message to the young generation today?

This is the most difficult question, it may not work out, as the relationship between the rabbi and the community, in my experience, is based on whether they are the same age as the rabbi or much younger than the rabbi. If you are the same age, you can understand your community. If you are much younger then I can send anything to young people, it will be commonplace or it will not be good. I can’t say don’t be paralyzed but remember, it’s so good because the slang goes, but it doesn’t fit me. I would suggest now that it really looks like I’m advertising The March of Life. The Process of Life in Budapest has found a sound with all ages that we cannot imitate in the synagogues, we cannot imitate it in the various martyr monuments. So somehow I would direct my youth there towards, say, the genre that The Process of Life does.
