Survivors Share Their Experiences
A hallmark of our MOL program has been the involvement
of Holocaust survivors. In 2005, we were be
honored by the presence of more than 1,000 of
these individuals, their children and grandchildren.
As time distances us from the war, we are slowly
losing these irreplaceable teachers. MOL 2005
may be the last opportunity for a major gathering
of survivors. Now more than ever we need their
wisdom and experience. We must learn from them
and continue
to tell the story.
Issues Forum
An important part of the Alumni March of the
Living Trip will be an Issues
Forum. Among the issues Included will be Anti-semitism
in Europe, the
lessons of the Holocaust for modern society
and Israel in the world arena.
MARCH OF THE LIVING 2005 ALUMNI TRIP
AN HISTORIC MISSION
As the end of World War II and the Holocaust
recede into the past, the need to remember is
critical. Hate continues to kill and destroy.
Prejudice and discrimination continue to divide
communities. We face enormous moral and
ethical challenges. The lessons of history,
in all their disturbing and painful complexity,
are there to guide us.
STRENGTHENING A COMMON BOND
The MOL Alumni Trip, in conjunction with MOL
2005, will be enriched by the
diversity of participants united in their expression
of respect and understanding for all people.
At a time when the world is struggling for solutions
to the problems of hatred and prejudice, the
MOL Alumni trip will
serve as a clear public affirmation of the need
and desire for peaceful coexistence.
Representatives of a wide variety of groups
will join in this effort; whether their focus
is political, educational, social activist,
religious or military,
they share this common commitment.
MOL 2005 looks back in time, but is equally
concerned with tomorrow. Acknowledging and understanding
where we have come from will help us to prepare
for the challenges we have yet to meet.
The March of the Living Alumni
Trip will be more than a commemoration.
On Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, 18,000
people from
around the world will assemble at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
They will gather to
honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust
and to commemorate the
Allied victory in Europe. This is a once in
a lifetime opportunity to commemorate the 60th
anniversary of the end of this terrible time
in our
history. When you pledge your involvement in
this historic event, you
become a partner in the effort to achieve a
more peaceful and secure world for ourselves,
and for future generations.
Millions of people were persecuted and murdered
during the unprecedented
regime of terror led by Hitler and the Nazis.
Six million Jews perished in the
Holocaust, the most horrific systematic genocide
in history. In addition, millions of others
lost their lives as political opponents, Roma
and Sinti, Jehovhs Witnesses, homosexuals,
the disabled, Poles and righteous gentiles.
Tens of millions of military and civilians also
fell over the course of the war.
Once again, on the MOL 2005, survivors will
symbolically pass on the responsibility to remember
the Holocaust. As we gather at the site of the
most heinous crimes against humanity, we will
once again pay tribute to the
world that was destroyed, and affirm our common
goal: creating a society
free of hatred and bigotry.
